Decision game & world championship day 1 - Recap

November 21st, 2022

Summary

The teams have once again prepared particularly intensively for the World Championship. With more sophisticated tactics and improved timings, most teams showed themselves very well-prepared for this extraordinary tournament weekend. A special highlight for all participating teams was the personal get-together, which has never happened before this season. Everybody enjoyed the time, cheered each other on and delivered excellent sporting encounters. On the first day of the World Championship, the upper brackets and the first match of the lower brackets were played. The winners from group A & B were the two favorite teams Trelleborg and New Holland.

Decision game place 8

Corteva Agriscience vs. Astragon

Before the World Championship could really start, the last place was played out the evening before. The tussle for the last world championship title contender pitted the teams of Corteva Agriscience and Astragon against each other. After three exciting rounds, the team of the German publisher Astragon emerged as the winner and was thus allowed to compete in the matches for the title of world champion in the coming days.

Decision Game between Corteva and Astragon

Group A

Upper tournament bracket:

Trelleberg vs. Astragon

The match day, and with it the official tournaments for the title of World Champion, opened with top of the table Trelleborg against bottom of the table Astragon. The players on both sides showed signs of excitement, which challenged their confidence in their own skill set. The clash was sealed with the first 2:0 game for Team Trelleborg. This meant that the Swedish team continued in the upper bracket, while the losing team got another chance in the lower bracket.

mYinsantiy vs. Bednar

The second match of the day already promised to be a special treat. The team of the eSports organization mYinsanity met the Czech players of Bednar. We have seen this pairing only once before in Season 4 during Online Tournament #5, in which mYinsanity emerged as the winner. On this day, Team Bednar was better prepared for the Swiss' style of play and made short work of it: after two rounds with a clear lead, Bednar moved on in the upper tournament tree. mYinsanity got a second chance in the lower bracket.

Trelleborg vs. Bednar

The third match was between the two previous winning teams Trelleborg and Bednar. We have seen this match-up a few times by now - they are never boring. The rivalry between the two teams should be settled in this match, at least for this season. Trelleborg showed a fantastic first round, but the second round was very close. If the Czech team had delivered the remaining two bales in the barn, we would have seen 3 rounds. So the teams split after only two rounds and the first group winner was decided: table leader and one of the favorite teams for the title, Team Trelleborg.

Lower tournament tree:

Astragon vs. mYinsanity

Next, the teams from Astragon and mYinsanity played out the first match of the lower tournament tree. For both teams it was now all or nothing, because whoever loses 2 games during the world championship will lose the chance to become world champion. In the meantime, both teams had time to choose their strategies and prepare accordingly for the upcoming opponent. In the execution, mYinsantiy kept their iron nerves, beat Astragon twice with a clear points lead and could thus take the next step in the tournament tree.
The last match in the lower bracket was the opening match of the second day. So here mYinsanity met Bednar again - it promised to be an exciting re-match!

Group B

Upper bracket:

New Holland vs. Valtra

The honor of the opening match of Group B was given to New Holland as the runner-up in the table against 7th place team Valtra. In season 3,

Valtra were among the favorites to win the title, however, after a player change during the off-season, the team did not manage to show a stable game performance yet. The clash between the French team and the Finnish team was already decided after two rounds. The New Holland squad showed its usual strength and saw off the Finns into the lower bracket.

DJK Ehenfeld vs. Lindner

In the second match of the lower tournament bracket, DJK Ehenfeld and Lindner showed their skills. We had the pleasure of witnessing this meeting in the last World Championship, where Lindner left the team of the sports club sitting behind the monitors with their mouths open. This season, however, the young team showed more understanding of the game and was able to counter ad hoc. The Austrians finally set themselves apart with the first over 1,000 point and three round match and climbed to the next level in the top bracket. Team

Valtra was already awaiting DJK Ehenfeld.

New Holland vs. Lindner

At first, the winner of Group B still had to be determined, who would land directly in the semifinals the next day. Team Lindner, which occasionally likes to dig deep into its bag of tricks, also has a top understanding of the game as well as a good amount of playing experience. After all, this team is one of the old hands in the league. They made that clear in the first round. The newcomers of the season did not let themselves be put under pressure and won the next two rounds, although the third ended with only two points difference.

Thus, it was certain that the second title contender had also passed his way through the upper bracket. New Holland was allowed to rest for a while on the second day of the World Championship.

Winner upper bracket, group B: New Holland

Lower bracket:

Valtra vs. DJK Ehenfeld
The last match of the day was between the two young teams from Valtra and DJK Ehenfeld. Valtra, whose team is formed from the team LSA playing in season 3, started well-prepared in the first round. As a result, the ambition was aroused in the team of the German sports club, and they showed a good game in the second round. Unfortunately, it was not enough to win this time, so Valtra entered the final matches the next day, while Team DJK Ehenfeld was finally eliminated from competition for the title.

Conclusion

Already the first day brought exciting matches, which you haven't seen too often in Season 4. As far as the level and the quality of the moves are concerned, all the players have once again pushed the envelope of perfection, which should not make the next day any less interesting. Some teams were probably disappointed, as the dream of winning the title was shattered. Despite some long journeys, many teams stayed on site to accompany the remaining teams on their way to the finals.
